Roberto Alagna – Flower Song

January 22, 2010

Alagna seems to be flat in a lot of places here. Almost consistantly just a little bit flat. The note at 1:05 is excellent though. It is interesting how different singers make different parts of a single aria more important. That spot didn’t jump out at me in either of the previous performances, but here it did. Haha. For example, here the drama of 2:17 is totally dampened, whereas in Domingos performance (perhaps because of the conductor) that line really exploded. 3:15 is a little bit pushed.

  1. Honestly I am not an Alagna fan. But this is fantastic. What on earth is the reviewer talking about Flat? I thought maybe my ear was failing me so I checked it with an pitch pipe and he is right on the money 95% of the time. and when he is not it is primarily sharp not flat. Beautiful pianos in the upper range. What a delight.

  2. I agree with Anton. Where this may not be one of Alagna’s greateste performance it is head and shoulders better than what many singers are producing these days. I too can not hear any evidence of him being flat. I do not know what this writer is talking about. Alagna shows his great technique with his pianissimi and gives a wonderful performance. As you can hear at the end of the performance, the crowd seemed to love it.
